Najaf is the city of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (a.s.), the first Imam and the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family). His shrine, with its golden dome and iwan, sits at the heart of the old city.
For many pilgrims, Najaf is where the Ziyarat journey begins. It is also a long-standing centre of Islamic learning.
During Arbaeen, many pilgrims set out from Najaf and walk toward Karbala.
