Karbala is where Imam Hussain (a.s.), the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), was martyred with his family and companions in 61 AH (680 CE). For centuries, pilgrims have come here to remember that sacrifice.
The city is home to the shrines of Imam Hussain (a.s.) and his brother Hazrat Abbas (a.s.). The open walkway between the two shrines, known as Bayn al-Haramayn, is one of the most moving places a pilgrim can stand.
Karbala is also the destination of the Arbaeen pilgrimage, when pilgrims from many countries gather to commemorate the fortieth day after Ashura.
